Marching Into Spring

The chaos of Spring weather is finally here, and with it the light begins to return. The weekend brought wind that chattered my old storm windows, as well as sunlight that beamed through to warm my toes.

The last couple of weeks has been a bit out of the ordinary for me because I’ve been recovering from a hip replacement surgery. Lucky for me I’m young and am recovering very quickly, and yet it’s been a very humbling experience to need a walker and a cane in order to get around.

My mind couldn’t help trying to convince me that the act of needing those things meant something about ME. Namely, that I was both weak and old. The Truth is, a walker and a cane are just tools that support our efforts to keep moving forward. Nothing more. Our minds might try to tell us stories that MAKE them mean more, and yet in the end we have control over what we choose to believe.

As you can imagine I explored a lot of thoughts about the vulnerability of aging over the last couple of weeks, What has gotten me through (with some grace) is the discipline of Acceptance, which is one of 10 disciplines taught through the iPEC COR.E Wellbeing program. In the next article, I’ll talk a bit more about how that one discipline can help us stop trying to constantly change what could be and what is already in our past so we can find some PEACE with what is.

Learning Acceptance

Last month I spoke about the discipline of Awareness, which helps us begin to see the ways we think and also the beliefs we hold that may no longer serve us. This month I wanted to talk about Acceptance, and how powerful of a tool it can be to raise our energetic engagement in life.

Using myself as an example, I could have let my mind run away with the story that I’m getting old and how this surgery might mark the first in many limitations that will come into my life. I had a lot of fears come up around this…and after I acknowledged them and grieved the loss, I chose to let that shit go.

This is where acceptance comes in. I can’t change the fact that I had an old injury that lead to my needing a new hip, and I can’t change the fact that it may limit me in some ways for the rest of my life. How I move forward from here is by allowing what IS to BE, and choosing to make the most of that.

How often do you find yourself fighting the facts of your circumstance in life? We have so many daily triggers that we allow to pull our energy into stress and unhappiness: traffic, weather, our age, and even the moods of others. When things are outside of our realm of control, the only thing we can do is control our reaction to them. Acceptance is the first step to making this happen.

Once you accept that traffic is going to be a part of your commute, you can take the energy you would have expended in anger and frustration and instead decide to view that additional time as an opportunity. You might download some of your favorite podcasts, have fun creating different play lists to uplift your mood, listen to a book on tape, or have a conversation with someone you’ve lost touch with.

Working with our minds and creating our own happiness is a practice, just like meditation, or playing music. We have to train our minds to think differently, but first we must have Awareness about the thoughts we create about our circumstances, and then choose Acceptance of what IS so we can move forward in a manner of our choosing.

In order to properly cite this intellectual property, these disciplines are part of a greater program that I am now certified to guide my clients through (COR.E Wellbeing Dynamics) that I learned at the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. If you would like more information on how you can start applying these ideas into your own life, I offer free discovery calls and love to chat about how they can help with challenges you might currently be facing.

Overwhelm happens when we overburden ourselves beyond our capacity. Learning to first identify what pushes us beyond our limits and then what grounds us back to ourselves can help us begin to LIVE again.

Day One
Why do we allow ourselves to become overwhelmed? Identifying what pushes us to to keep piling on more and more until we break creates the awareness we need to choose another way.
- Class length 1.5 hours

Day Two
What are the values that embody YOU? We will take time to look at our values and see how our overburdened selves crave to be realigned with what matters most in our lives.
- Class length 1.5 hours

Day Three
Now that we know what pushes us to overwhelm, and have learned the power of aligning with our values, we will create your individual plan that will help you begin to navigate your triggers in the future.

If What I'm Saying Speaks to You...

Please consider forwarding this newsletter to other women you know who might be looking for a change in their life so they can choose to become a subscriber.

My focus as a coach is to help women get curious about what they want in life, to define not only the path of where they are heading, but also the fears and old beliefs that get in their way so we can face them together.

We as women have better things to do than shrinking to fit what others think we should be, and it is through our connections with each other that we are able to move mountains.

Thank you for being a part of my vision to mentally liberate women everywhere to be their most true and passionate selves.
