New Beginnings in 2024
The New Year almost always gives people a spark of hope or inspiration for creating a new beginning in their lives, but how do we all keep that hope and inspiration alive throughout the year?
We've all made those resolutions that seem to fall flat after a month or so, it doesn't matter what they are, if they require a shift in routine we will almost always fall back to what is comfortable and familiar.
James Clear, the writer of the book "Atomic Habits" offers some incredible insights on the many different ways we can put attention to reprograming our minds to embrace and build new systems of change.
One of the suggestions that I found helpful was to define the attributes of the person you want to be, and begin aligning your choices to this future self. If you want to read more books over the next year, you need to identify where you can make more time for reading and then change your choices.
He also talks about making a new habit "obvious" and "attractive". In this instance, you might put the book you are reading on the table next to your favorite chair and move the TV remote out of reach. To make it a more attractive choice, you might also buy a special kind of tea that you are only allowed to drink while you are reading.
Regardless of what it is we are wanting for our future selves, it is best if the desire isn't rooted in negative self judgment. If you are trying to lose weight because you judge yourself to be "too heavy" or "unloveable" at your current size, saying "yes" to dessert once might lead you not only to further self judgment, but to a decision to give up trying all together.
Instead, try to view the change through a lens of learning self love. Recognize that you are just where you need to be in life, and that everything up to this point has prepared you to realize what and who you want to be moving forward. Eating that same dessert becomes an opportunity to learn what drove your choice instead of seeing it as a mistake. From that learning you can decide what is right for you the next time and make a more conscious choice.
So as you are making your way through this month, remember to keep some loving self compassion, and consider checking out "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. If you need some extra accountability, don't be afraid to contact me for some support. The first 3 people who reach out to me with NEW YEAR as the subject in the email will receive an additional 15% off a 10 series package of coaching sessions. - Happy New Year!
Ch Ch Ch Ch Changes....
The last time I sent out a newsletter, I was embracing the digital nomad life with my husband Jonathan. We had so far gone all over Europe, to Bangalore in India, Panama, and Colombia.
Life on the road is an incredible way to learn about who you are, and more about what does and doesn't work for you on a daily basis. For myself, I learned that my soul appreciates a balance of both home base and travel.
So we are back in Port Townsend, WA currently and slowly getting acclimated to being in the PNW again. I have an office at home, and am enjoying meeting clients in person and going for walks or coffee as we talk, something I wish I could do with all my clients at least once!
So if you live in the area, and are interested in meeting with a LIVE coach instead of one that is online, I'd love to connect or reconnect with you anytime.
We All Deserve To Be Seen
This image is of a statue called La Révélation that I saw in Paris many years ago outside the Grande Palais. The hand lifting the hair of the woman belongs to a man who is looking at her in awe. She gave me the impression of a woman who is knowingly and fearlessly stepping out to be seen.
What I also love is the peaceful look on her face. I see the expression of someone who is without fear of being judged and is in tune with who she is in the moment.
I have been doing my best to tune into this part of myself more lately, and what's helped most is being inspired by other strong women who let themselves shine brightly. Women like Jenifer Lewis, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, Sofia Vergara, and Hannah Waddingham help me see my own potential as a woman in this world.
As a recovering people pleaser, I recognize that in being predominantly focused on keeping everyone around me happy I have forfeited my own inner truth. These women remind me to stand my ground, drop the bullshit, and just BE who I AM.
When we have role models to look to, they can ignite our own inner magnificence with just their presence alone. They can completely blow open the doors we try to lock ourselves behind because they have already done it and THRIVED.
We all can too, and in giving ourselves permission we will continue to inspire other women to do the same.💃
If What I'm Saying Speaks to You...
Please consider forwarding this newsletter to other women you know who might be looking for change in their life so they too can choose to become a subscriber.
You know the ones.
They are amazing people who are always there for everyone but themselves. They put their needs last because there is plenty of time for that "later" once ____ has happened.
I freaking love seeing these exhausted women light up when they finally begin to feel the difference between the weight of defining themselves by everything they DO for others, and the weightlessness of truly just BEING themselves. There is a difference, and the magic that happens afterwards is something I am on a mission to spread far and wide.
