So What Exactly IS Coaching?

For those of you who are new to the concept of coaching, I wanted to explain what Coaching IS by first highlighting what it is NOT.

  • THERAPY - Therapists are trained to help us when we have a diagnosis we’re learning to work with, or past traumas that impede not only our ability to exist in our present but to imagine a successful future.

  • MENTORING - Mentoring helps provide advice on how to deal with certain issues and situations. It can also provide us the support we need when making decisions.

  • CONSULTING - Consultants help us when we have a specific thing we would like to accomplish and we want the advice from someone who is an expert in that field.

When people hear the word "coach", football and sports tend to come to mind. If you look at it from the perspective that a good coach supports their players by helping them be the best they can be, then it is very similar to the work that I do with my clients. Sports coaches also attend to mindset and focus and work with the player's strengths to help them attain their goals...but in the end THE PLAYER is the one doing the work.

A Life Coach’s job is to truly listen and provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment for you to connect with YOU. The tools of a great Coach are listening, intuition, and open ended questions that come from a place of curiosity. When used well, these and other tools hold up a mirror that can provide clients with an awareness of what holds them back, and also equip them to optimally and authentically move forward. The coach supports with the tools, but, just like the sports player, the CLIENT is the only one who can do the real internal work.

A Specialty Niche is Born

In the coaching realm, it helps to have what they call a "niche" to focus your knowledge and hone your tools in order to create effective and long lasting change for your clients.

I decided that my niche and my mission is to help women that have spent their lives unconsciously “DOING” for everyone else, make a conscious shift to “BEING” ENOUGH for themselves.

Though perfectionism has the ability to push us to be our best, it also has the ability to incapacitate and create terrible self-judgment and resulting anguish. Couple this with people pleasing tendencies, and we can find ourselves living a life where we’re never able to connect with our own desires and deepest brilliance.

One reason I chose this niche is because I am a recovering perfectionist/people pleaser myself. The self discovery & A-HA moments I have experienced in the past year through coaching have in all honesty changed my life, and I will say that freedom to be who YOU are is possible.

If you are ready to do the work, brave enough to explore your fears and let them know “you got this” - then let’s do a discovery call to see what is possible.

My Nomadic Coaching Journey…

Since my husband and I met, we have had a dream and a goal to become digital nomads, and this meant we both needed to find work that we could do from literally anywhere. Jonathan was way ahead of me in this regard, and already was learning how to build websites when we met. My job however, required me to be seated at a desk within an office, and I’ll admit I didn’t have the first clue as to how to change that situation.

As the years went by at my job, I gained new responsibilities that later introduced me to the concept of overwhelm, and it was during that time that I started visualizing what a new and different future might look like. I still had no idea what I wanted to be when I “grew up”, but I WAS able to create a clear picture in my mind of what I aspired my perfect day to look like. So I set about writing down all of its details, in the hopes that I could begin to call my purpose towards me.

Shortly there after I learned about Life Coaching, and I was totally intrigued. I had never heard about it before, but realized that it could perfectly fit in with both the vision of my ideal day and allow me the freedom to embrace a digital nomad life. I sat on the idea for 5 more years, and all the while my best friend was telling me to hurry up so she could become my first client. Unfortunately, my inner perfectionist and people pleaser just had too many fears and doubts that kept me locked to inaction.

A little over a year ago something happened that finally inspired my leap. The death of my best friend. Though she fought hard to live, she left this world and took all of her unrealized dreams with her. I felt her push me one last time while whispering in my ear, “life is short Jen, make it happen”. The fears keeping me from inaction no longer mattered because I knew I was doing what was right for ME.

Fast forward to today, and I am currently writing this newsletter from Colombia, after having spent the year traveling between Hawaii, U.S. Mainland, India, Panama, and Europe. My schooling at iPEC, and the peer coaching I received was undoubtedly the support I needed to get me here. To make a dream happen you have to take the steps, baby ones, big ones, and knock off the goals one at a time. Coaching supports that journey, and more importantly the very individual journey of "being."
